For a few years now, foodies across the USA have been saying that Spanish food is the new high-class Italian; easy to make, yet nuanced and (when authentic) adventurous. I’m here to say that after living in Barcelona for a year, those recipes you see in Saveur aren’t quiet what they serve on the Peninsula. While I miss a lot of things, including Nutella’s much tastier sibling Nocilla and croquetas, the things I do not miss include morcilla, magdalenas, white asparagus in a can and bacalao. For those of you who wish you could still eat Spanish favorites, or want to remind yourself why your stomach is happy to be back stateside, have a look at La Tienda and Despaña Brand Foods.

The fundamental building blocks of our childhood became digital. What does that say about our generation?
    Lego pile
…I kinda wanna build a baby version of my car and glue it to the dash.

On the Wikipedia page for Humboldt County, my most recent pre-collegiate home, the only subheading under Agriculture is Marijuana. True. Which is why I’m not too upset that the main focus of the new film of same name will be The Industry. Along with the rest of the kids who spend their summers back home, however, I do hope that this movie doesn’t mean the Arcata plaza gets flooded with the kind of stupid tourists who think the weed just falls from the sky. The again, maybe that’d be good for business. Whatever the repercussions for the county, I agree with my brother; “this movie had better not suck.”

WordPress itself brought this to my attention, and damn is it pretty. The only thing better than the sneak peek at such delicious (potentially totally superfluous) architecture, is the fifth comment down: “Absolutely insane. Dubai is like some SimCity player going nuts in the real-world.” Clearly that’s what makes the city awesome. Oh, and Ishmael Leyva can suck it.

People are inherently awkward creatures, especially when it comes to posting personal ads. Take, for instance, a photo exhibit featuring absolutely giant 40″ x 30″ high res polaroids of people who submitted personal ads to various find-me-a-date thingies. Jeffrey Aaronson tracked them down, photographed them, then recorded them reading their statements aloud to stick it all on a national gallery wall and the lovely internet. Two of my favorites: this guy and this guy.

Two frustrating things: translation and programming. Similarities: effective guess work, numerous correct answers and even more incorrect ones, text books that explain process and not practice, and foreign language barriers.

I wonder if people were more productive in college before the internet happened. Probably, but then again you’d have to weigh the inconvenience of typewriters over the temptation to type absolutely irrelevant blog posts. Who would have guessed that the time consuming task of typing would become our chosen task for time consumption.

So, Jay, I was just having a conversation today about how feasible it actually is to snip off the internet somewhere in the middle of the ocean. Looks like its happening. I’d call that a major weak point in the entire setup, kind of like having the jugular vein in such a target zone. So who’s got the giant, underseas cable cutters? Million dollar question, I suppose.
